A senior living community bundles a room, meals, care staff and activities into one monthly fee paid by residents. Ventas owns many such communities, mostly in America. It is a real estate investment trust, a property company that must pay out at least 90% of its taxable income to shareholders. It does not run the communities itself. It hires outside operators for the daily work, collects the residents' fees and pays the bills. It also owns outpatient medical buildings, research centers and other healthcare properties that it rents to tenants.
