T-Mobile's monthly phone plans have become far more profitable and cash-rich, and most of that cash goes back to shareholders. Recent growth is partly bought through acquisitions, so the integration must now deliver while payouts stay high.
A phone can stream a video or find a map because a signal reaches it from a nearby tower. T-Mobile runs one of the networks that carry those signals across the United States, so a phone plan you know may well run on it. At the end of 2025 it served 142 million customers, making it, by that count, the second-largest US wireless provider. People pay it every month to stay connected by phone and through home internet.
The money comes from that monthly service, not from phones. The main engine is postpaid customers (people on an ongoing plan who pay a monthly bill), who brought in $57.9 billion in . Prepaid plans and resale to partners add less. Phones mainly win and keep customers, often through discounts or bill credits that tie buyers to a contract. The network is a large fixed cost, so what remains depends on how many paying customers it carries and what they pay. When rivals such as AT&T, Verizon and cable companies discount or bundle, T-Mobile answers with promotions, and that spending sits between the bill and the profit.
