If you save through a pension or an investment fund, part of that money may follow a stock market index. An index is a list of companies whose combined performance shows how a market is doing. S&P Global maintains benchmarks like these. It also grades the debt that companies and governments sell when they borrow; these credit ratings are opinions on how likely a borrower is to repay. It sells data, research, analyst software and price assessments (reference prices) for energy, metals and shipping too. Asset managers, banks, insurers, traders and borrowers pay for access to tools they use every day.
