Paccar's profits jumped in the third quarter of 2026, a rebound management credits mainly to truck pricing. Whether truck buyers order more once the 2027 emissions rules are settled will show if it lasts.
The big truck passing you on a highway may be a Kenworth, Peterbilt or DAF. Paccar builds all three. It sells them mainly in North America, Europe and Brasil, from plants that stretch from the United States to Australia. Paccar also makes diesel engines, which go into nearly all heavy DAF trucks. Many buyers then borrow the money for their truck from Paccar's own lending arm.
Truck buyers pay for a premium truck built to order, and many keep paying Paccar for years through a loan or lease. Truck volume and pricing cause most of the swings in profit, and both follow freight demand. Overhead (offices, administration and research) costs little compared with sales. So the gap between a truck's price and its production cost, the , decides most of what Paccar earns. The lending arm earns the difference between its borrowing cost and what customers pay, and each loan is backed by a truck it can take back and resell. But downturns bring more late payments and cheaper used trucks just as new orders fall.
