Can Ollie's keep growing while its existing stores sell less?

Ollie's sells brand-name closeout goods cheaply in plain stores and pays for its own expansion. In the latest quarter its margins jumped while existing stores sold less, leaving more of the growth to new stores.

What the company does

Many shoppers know the thrill of finding a familiar brand at a price that looks like a mistake. Ollie's Bargain Outlet builds a chain of stores around that moment. Its buyers snap up closeout goods, meaning surplus or leftover stock that manufacturers and wholesalers want to clear. The company then sells them in plain, warehouse-style stores, with everything from detergent to patio furniture. Price tags show a rival's price next to Ollie's own, so the saving is visible on the shelf. The company grows mainly by opening new stores.

How it earns

Shoppers pay for brands they recognise at prices the company says run up to 70% below traditional retailers. The company believes the constantly changing stock brings them back more often, because they never know what they will find. The money is made at the buying end. Ollie's buys cheaply enough to undercut regular shops and still keep a healthy gap between what it pays and what it charges. How much of that gap survives depends on staff, rent and distribution costs. Low-rent sites, which the company looks for among existing vacant buildings with strong traffic, and no-frills fittings keep those costs down. Most stores are leased, so rent is a fixed bill whatever sales do. Sales peak around the holidays, so Ollie's must stock up beforehand, tying up cash in .
