A toll network for card payments
Mastercard Inc. runs a payment network — the shared technology and rules that move a card transaction between the merchant's bank and the cardholder's bank. Mastercard does not issue cards or lend money to shoppers. It earns fees when banks, merchants, and cardholders route payments across its network, and it sells related services such as security, digital authentication, consumer engagement, and data insights. Its customers are mainly financial institutions and partners. Because the network is already built, extra payment activity adds revenue without heavy physical spending, which is why more transactions can turn quickly into profit and cash.
