Mastercard Incorporated sells payment-network capabilities and related services to financial institutions and other customers. Its network authorizes, clears and settles electronic payments, giving participants shared transaction handling under common rules. Domestic and cross-border payment volumes and processed transactions drive network revenue. Customer rebates and incentives reduce what Mastercard retains; payment-network net revenue already reflects them. Security, authentication and business insights provide another source of revenue. Operating costs then affect how retained revenue becomes profit.
In the second quarter of 2026, network net revenue rose 10% year over year, or 8% currency-neutral. Value-added services and solutions net revenue increased 20%, while rebates and incentives grew 22% to $5,997 million. The growth rates describe different bases, rather than a calculation of margin or an additional deduction from net revenue.
Management attributed the incentive increase primarily to payment activity and new and renewed deals. These concessions can help obtain or retain business. The economic question is the benefit received in exchange. Faster-growing services offer another route to profit growth, but their revenue growth does not demonstrate better margins than the network category.
