The server that answers your chatbot question may have been built in a Jabil factory, even though another company's name is on it. Jabil is a contract manufacturer: it builds products to other companies' specifications and can also design them, from first concept to mass production. Its customers include cloud and networking firms, automotive and healthcare companies, and retailers. They pay Jabil to make their products in volume, reliably and on time.
Most of Jabil's business units serve a single customer on dedicated production lines, with their own equipment, staff and engineers. Most of what customers pay covers components and production, so only a thin layer of profit stays behind. How thick that layer is depends on how well Jabil buys parts, how fully its lines run and how tightly it holds overhead, the office and support costs. Many costs are relatively fixed, so a drop in demand for a big program hurts the margin, not just sales. Intelligent Infrastructure, the largest of three divisions, serves customers in AI, cloud data centers and networking. It brought in $17.9 billion in , and almost all of the year's gain in division profit came from it.
