Every meal tray carried down a nursing-home corridor, and every stack of freshly washed sheets, needs a kitchen and a laundry someone has to run. At thousands of US care facilities, mostly nursing homes and other long-term care operators, Healthcare Services Group runs them. The operator pays a fee to hand over a whole department, and the company keeps what remains after wages, food and supplies.
When a care operator hands over a department, the company usually hires the staff already working there, appoints an on-site manager and buys the food and supplies. Profit is the gap between the fee and those costs, so it depends on running each department efficiently. Imagine a home whose cooks get a raise: if the fee catches up slowly, the gap narrows. Kitchens bring in more revenue, but cleaning and laundry keep more of each dollar. For the third quarter of 2026, management put segment margins (the share of a segment's revenue left as its profit) at 13% for cleaning and laundry and 8.7% for kitchens. Customers are not locked in: contracts renew, and either side can end them at short notice.
