Can Enova keep borrowing cheaply enough to keep lending profitably?

Enova lends online to American households and small businesses that banks serve poorly. Its profits have risen with fast growth, but its loans are funded with borrowed money, and interest takes a large share of operating profit.

What the company does

Enova lends money through websites. Its customers are American households and small businesses that have bank accounts but struggle to borrow from banks. A household may take an installment loan, repaid in fixed amounts over months, or a credit line. A small business may use Enova's OnDeck or Headway Capital financing. Almost all revenue comes from the United States. Enova earns the interest and fees borrowers pay. It keeps what is left after unpaid loans, running costs and the cost of its own borrowing.

How it earns

Borrowers pay for quick, flexible credit, priced by how risky each one looks. Those interest payments and fees are Enova's revenue, an accounting figure rather than cash collected. Three things decide what remains. First, how much of what it lends comes back. Second, funding. Enova groups loans into pools and sells investors notes (debt securities) backed by them, a method called securitization. It also borrows through a secured credit line, one backed by assets it pledges. Those investors and lenders set the price at each issue or renewal, so this is the cost Enova controls least. Third, scale: how many customers the same technology and data platform can serve.
