A new work laptop that arrives already set up and ready to use may well have passed through a company like PC Connection. It makes nothing itself. It buys computers, servers, software and networking gear from manufacturers such as Microsoft, HP and Dell. It then designs, sets up, delivers and supports that technology for large companies, smaller businesses and public bodies. For multinationals, it also buys through local suppliers in more than 150 countries.
Customers pay for the equipment and for the work of making it run. An account manager works out what they need, the company's distribution centre sets up the machines, and support follows. PC Connection keeps the gap between what it pays suppliers and what customers pay it, and from that covers the sales staff and engineers who win and serve each account. That gap is thin, so what it sells, and to whom, matters. The company says services and more complex products earn more than ordinary equipment. Smaller business customers bring in most of the profit; large accounts add volume but little profit per dollar. The company also pays suppliers before customers pay it, so growth ties up cash in unpaid invoices and (unsold goods).
