In Michigan, switching on a lamp or lighting a gas stove probably starts with Consumers Energy, the utility that CMS Energy owns. It delivers electricity and natural gas across the state through its own plants, power lines and pipes. CMS also has a small renewables arm, NorthStar Clean Energy, which it is now leaving. What remains is almost entirely a regulated utility. Its profit depends on how much it invests in the network and on the return a state regulator lets it earn.
