If you have driven a recent car, some of the software behind its safety systems may have come from BlackBerry. The company sells QNX, an operating system (the basic software that runs a device) built for vehicle systems where a fault could be dangerous. Its customers are carmakers, the large suppliers that build parts for them, and the chip makers whose processors go into vehicles. BlackBerry also sells software that protects calls, messages and data. And it earns money by licensing a large portfolio of patents.
