When a phone shows full bars on a highway, the call probably travels through an antenna bolted high on a steel tower. American Tower runs sites like that across the United States and Canada, Latin America, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe, plus data centers and, in some markets, fiber cables that carry data. It acts as a landlord. Wireless carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon pay rent to place equipment on its sites, and data-center customers pay for space and related services.
