PayPal Holdings Inc. runs a global payment network that connects shoppers and merchants so people can pay, send money, and manage their spending online and in stores. Shoppers can fund payments from bank accounts, cards, PayPal or Venmo balances, or cryptocurrencies, while merchants use its checkout, payment processing, fraud tools, and financing to complete sales. PayPal earns most of its money by charging a fee each time it processes a payment, so the total value of payments flowing through the network drives revenue. It adds more from currency conversion, instant transfers, credit products, and interest on the money it holds for customers. It served 439 million active accounts across roughly 200 markets.

In the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, payments through the network rose 10% to $486.4 billion, but the money left after transaction costs, which PayPal calls transaction margin dollars, rose only 1% to $3.9 billion. More activity is not turning into proportionally more retained value, and operating margin slipped to 16.4% from 18.1% a year earlier. That gap decides whether growth becomes profit.

The same quarter produced $2 billion of operating cash flow and $1.8 billion of free cash flow, which funded $1.5 billion of share repurchases that cut diluted shares to 882 million from 977 million. Robust cash and a lower share count sit oddly beside falling margins, and that contradiction is what makes the company worth understanding now.
