Before water reaches a kitchen tap, someone has to pump it, clean it and measure how much each home uses. Once it goes down the drain, it must be moved and treated again. Xylem makes pumps, treatment systems and smart meters that send their readings remotely, all used for this work. It sells them to water utilities, to the contractors that build their networks, and to farms, mines and factories in about 150 countries. Xylem earns first from the hardware, then from the parts, replacements and services that installed machines need for years.
