Picture a motorhome pulling into a campsite, or a camper trailer hitched behind a pickup on a summer road. Winnebago Industries builds both kinds of recreational vehicle (RV), plus boats, in plants in Indiana, Iowa and Florida. It sells to independent dealers, mainly in the United States and Canada, who stock the vehicles and resell them. Its sales follow how confident those dealers feel about retail buyers.
Dealers are the paying customers. Most borrow the purchase price from a lender, with the vehicle as security, so Winnebago is paid when a unit reaches the lot, well before a family buys it. It also promises those lenders that if a dealer defaults, it will typically buy back repossessed units at the amount still owed, for a limited period after financing. Towable RVs, trailers pulled by another vehicle, remain the largest profit source, although motorhomes now bring in more sales. What remains depends on plant volumes, the mix of dearer and cheaper models, discounting and overhead, the running costs not tied to building each unit. Overhead swallows most of the profit left after building costs, so small swings in volume or price move results a long way.
