Tesla Inc is economically a manufacturer that earns money by selling and leasing its own vehicles and energy systems, with production and related customer services carrying the business. A customer buying an electric vehicle for transport generally purchases directly from Tesla; that transaction generates automotive sales revenue.
Leasing provides vehicle use through a separate automotive leasing revenue mechanism.
Using the vehicle can also involve a distinct paid transaction: a Supercharging session supplies electricity for driving and contributes to services and other revenue. That category combines service receipts with product sales, including used vehicles, rather than representing charging fees alone.
These transactions do not establish that a vehicle purchaser subsequently buys another Tesla service.
For energy customers, the product provides electricity generation or storage. Tesla earns revenue through product sales and leasing, financing arrangements and related services within energy generation and storage. Automotive regulatory-credit sales and energy-generation incentive sales are additional mechanisms, distinct from customer payments for equipment or its use.
Tesla describes manufacturing-cost reduction as an effort to lower customer ownership costs; the offering description alone does not establish achieved savings or returns from its AI development.
