ServiceNow rents software that large organisations use to run everyday work, and demand kept growing through September 2026. It borrowed to buy companies in 2026, reported margins fell, and whether those deals pay back their cost is unclear.
Starting a new job at a large organisation means computer access, a payroll record, security checks and a building pass. ServiceNow may be behind that list. Its platform links the departments involved, and its AI agents (software that carries out tasks by itself) can handle each step, so the new hire does not have to chase several offices. Its customers are large companies and public bodies, which pay a recurring fee for the right to use the platform.
Almost all revenue comes from those subscriptions; a small slice comes from professional work billed by time spent. Customers pay before the service is delivered, so cash arrives ahead of the revenue the accounts record. Running the service is fairly cheap, though it needs staff, data centres and rented cloud capacity. The heavier costs are the engineers who build the product and, above all, the sales force. What remains depends on those costs growing more slowly than subscriptions. Beside the business sits a portfolio of bonds worth $4.6 billion at September 30, 2026, mostly $3.3 billion issued by companies and $1.1 billion by the U.S. government and its agencies. On the same date the company held $2.4 billion of cash, and $2.2 billion of short-term investments.
