Markel invests the money customers pay before claims arrive, and that portfolio keeps earning. The open question is whether its reshaped insurance business can earn steady underwriting profit through catastrophe losses and market swings.
A cargo ship crossing a war zone, an energy plant or a seller worried about unpaid invoices all need someone willing to cover the loss. Markel Group sells this kind of specialty insurance, including marine, energy and terrorism cover in the Middle East. The insurer sits inside a holding company that also owns industrial, consumer and financial businesses. Insurance still brings in most of the revenue, and it supplies the money Markel invests.
Customers pay premiums up front, but claims are often settled months or years later. Meanwhile Markel invests that money along with the profits it keeps, so it can earn twice: from underwriting (pricing and accepting risks) when premiums exceed claims and costs, and again on the investments. At September 30, 2026, invested assets including cash were $37.4 billion, of which listed shares made up $13.1 billion. Money owed to policyholders funds them, including $33.9 billion of unpaid claims. Claims are the largest cost, so what remains depends on pricing risks well and on reserves for future claims proving adequate. Changes in share values run straight through profit, so reported earnings swing with the stock market. Growth in shareholders' equity, the owners' stake on the books, is a better gauge of progress.
