CarMax is selling more used cars again, but makes less on each one before overhead. The open question is whether lower costs and its own car loans can turn that volume into lasting profit.
Buying a used car often means haggling, worrying about what is under the hood and arranging a loan. CarMax tackles all three, in its stores and online. It sells used cars at fixed, no-haggle prices, after inspecting and repairing each one to its own standards. Many buyers also borrow from its lending arm, CarMax Auto Finance. Cars that miss the standard go to CarMax's own auctions.
The buyer pays a fixed price for an inspected, repaired car and often adds a loan and a protection plan. CarMax keeps the gap between what it paid for the car and what it charges, minus repair costs. Loan applications go first to CarMax Auto Finance, which makes its own offers and earns loan income over the life of the loans it keeps. Others go to outside lenders: some pay CarMax a fixed fee, some pay nothing, and for the weakest borrowers CarMax pays the lender to keep the sale. , the share of sales left after the cost of the cars, has stayed roughly steady for years. So profit depends less on what each car earns than on the overhead, the cost of staff, stores and administration, that every sale must carry.
