Before a new medicine reaches a pharmacy shelf, it is tested on volunteers in carefully run studies called clinical trials. Iqvia runs those trials for drug developers that choose to outsource the work. It also sells health data and software built on very large collections of anonymised patient records. Drug companies, insurers and governments use them to judge whether treatments are safe, effective and worth their cost. Most of this work runs under contracts lasting several years.
