The phone in your pocket probably holds chips that were designed and tested on a computer long before any factory made them. Cadence Design Systems sells the tools for that work. Chip companies use its software to draw circuits and its emulation systems (machines that imitate a chip before it exists) to catch mistakes. Cadence also licenses semiconductor IP (ready-made circuit blocks, such as the links between chips and memory) that customers drop into their own designs. Such chips end up in cars, phones, data centres and AI processors. Every new chip is a new project that needs the tools again.
