The Boeing Company sells commercial jets to airlines, military aircraft and defense systems to defense customers, and aerospace support services to both groups. Boeing earns revenue from supplying equipment and from maintenance, spare parts, modifications and training. Airlines use its jets to carry passengers and cargo; Boeing receives aircraft sales revenue, rather than their fares. Manufacturing economics depend on what customers pay relative to aircraft development and production costs. Supporting equipment already in service is a separate business with its own earnings.
In the first half of 2026, Commercial Airplanes generated $20,954 million in revenue but recorded an $885 million operating loss. Its loss narrowed versus the comparable six months of 2025, yet aircraft sales still failed to cover operating costs. The recovery matters because commercial aircraft were Boeing’s largest revenue engine in that period. Higher production needs to improve the economics of this business for the owner case to become durable.
Boeing reported $156 million in consolidated operating earnings in the second quarter of 2026. That period lacked the $445 million Department of Justice agreement charge recorded in the comparable quarter of 2025. The absence of that charge helps the earnings comparison, but does not show that producing aircraft has become more profitable.
