When an employer offers a health plan, or a factory owner insures a warehouse against fire, someone designs the cover and finds insurers to carry the risk. If you have workplace benefits, a firm such as Aon may have arranged them. Aon is a broker, meaning a go-between that places risks with insurers rather than carrying them itself. It also advises organisations worldwide on pay, benefits and pensions, and helps insurers buy reinsurance (insurance for insurers). Clients pay Aon fees and commissions for placing their risks and for its advice.
