Its Semiconductor Systems business sells production equipment grouped by function, including patterning and process-control systems.

The company reports two segments. Semiconductor Systems is the largest contributor to revenue and sells equipment used across chip manufacturing. Applied Global Services (AGS) supports customers’ installed equipment through services and spares, helping maintain plant performance and productivity. Semiconductor Systems primarily monetizes new equipment purchases, while AGS monetizes the continuing need to operate that equipment.

Management prioritizes research, development and engineering (RD&E) to deliver new materials-engineering products before strong demand emerges, allowing customers to incorporate them into technology plans. The key operating dependency is customer capital-equipment spending, which varies with semiconductor demand, factory utilization, technology changes, financing, trade policy, and export regulations.
