Autoliv makes airbags, steering wheels and seatbelts for carmakers worldwide. In the third quarter of 2026 its underlying sales fell less than global car production, but it kept slightly less from each sale, testing whether its margin recovery can last.
The seatbelt you click before driving off, and the airbag folded inside the steering wheel, may well have been made by Autoliv. It supplies these parts to carmakers around the world, from Japanese and European brands to American and Chinese ones. Its customers are the carmakers, which build its parts into their new vehicles. What they buy is something that must work perfectly the one time it is needed.
Airbags and steering wheels form the larger product line and the main engine. In 2025, airbag products brought in $7.3 billion of the company's $10.8 billion of revenue, and seatbelt products made up the rest. What Autoliv keeps depends on making standard designs at large scale with no defects. The materials that go directly into each product took about $54 of every $100 of sales in 2025. Many contracts fix prices, often for the whole life of a car model. So when materials, labour or shipping get more expensive, Autoliv may recover the increase from carmakers late or only in part.
