JPMorgan is a large diversified bank. It gathers deposits from households, small businesses, companies, institutions, and governments, then uses those relationships to lend money, move payments, arrange financing, trade for clients, and manage investments. Customers pay for borrowing, transactions, access to markets, and money management. The work sits in three parts: a consumer bank built around cards and home lending, a commercial and investment bank serving companies and institutions, and an asset and wealth arm for wealthy clients and large asset owners. Because earnings come from several lending and fee activities rather than one product, no single business carries the whole company, and different parts can offset each other through changing conditions.

JPMorgan reported $21.2 billion of net income, including a $3.4 billion after-tax gain tied to Visa shares. Excluding significant one-off items, underlying earnings were $16.9 billion. The reason to understand JPMorgan now is whether ordinary client businesses can hold earnings once those gains disappear from results.

Underneath the one-off, managed revenue and expense each rose 15% from a year earlier, and return on tangible common equity was 23%, meaning JPMorgan generated high annualized profit from the core shareholder capital supporting the business. The open point is whether that strength repeats without market windfalls.
