Exxon Mobil Corporation produces oil and gas and sells fuels, chemicals and specialty products. Upstream is its oil and gas production business; refining and manufacturing turn inputs into products sold to customers. Commodity prices shape what these activities earn. More expensive crude can help production while raising costs elsewhere in the group, so a higher oil price does not improve every business in the same way.
Earnings attributable to ExxonMobil were $14.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026, compared with $7.1 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Management described second-quarter markets as supportive. The rebound establishes earning capacity under those conditions, rather than a permanent operating improvement.
In its second-quarter 2026 earnings-driver analysis, ExxonMobil reported a $4,650 million favorable price contribution to Upstream earnings. Higher crude prices were partly offset by lower gas prices. That contribution shows why the quarter's improvement cannot all be attributed to production or cost execution.
