A home security camera that can tell a person at the door from a swaying branch needs a chip that understands video as it records. Ambarella designs that kind of chip. A camera in your home or a driver-assistance system in a car may carry one, since internet-connected devices and cars have long been its largest markets. Its systems-on-chip (single chips that capture, compress and interpret video) run artificial intelligence inside the device rather than in a distant data centre. Outside factories build them, and Ambarella earns by selling them to device makers, mostly through one Asian distributor.
