Abbott Laboratories sells medical devices, diagnostic tests, nutrition products and branded generic medicines. Product performance and customer contracts help determine which products win sales; competition, rebates and price controls affect the net prices Abbott receives. Its current challenge combines two sources of growth: existing Medical Devices products and diagnostics added through the Exact Sciences acquisition. Both must contribute enough profit and cash to justify the costs of the expanded business.
In the first half of 2026, Abbott spent $19,962 million on business and technology acquisitions, net of cash acquired, and received $19,827 million from long-term debt issuance. These are separate cash-flow lines, rather than a complete account of which borrowing funded each use. Exact Sciences adds Cancer Diagnostics within Diagnostic Products; acquired sales alone do not demonstrate a return on the capital committed.
First-half 2026 sales increased to $23,757 million from $21,500 million in the prior-year half, while operating earnings fell to $3,038 million from $3,745 million. Product costs, research, selling and administrative expenses, and amortization increased. The expanded business sells more, but currently retains less operating profit.
