In the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, revenue rose 49% year over year to $44.5 billion.

Refining generated $4.5 billion of operating income, showing that the main spread business carried profit as well as revenue.

Adjusted operating cash flow available to Valero was $4.49 billion in the quarter after removing working-capital effects and the other DGD partner’s share, against $346 million of capital investments attributable to Valero, leaving about $4.14 billion on a comparable cash basis before distributions.

The key operating issue is whether refining margins stay favorable enough to keep turning feedstock and fuel price gaps into recurring profit and cash.

That driver matters because Refining remains the main profit engine, while Renewable Diesel has additional exposure to tariffs, feedstock economics, and policy changes. If margins hold while California transition work continues, Valero keeps more room for buybacks, dividends, and debt management. If margins weaken, revenue weight will matter less than the loss of profit and cash conversion.

Valero Energy is mainly a fuel processor and marketer. It buys crude oil, corn, and other feedstocks, turns them into transportation fuels, and earns money from the spread between input costs and finished-product selling prices.

Customers pay for finished fuels, not raw commodities. Valero sells through third-party outlets and other fuel customers rather than a company-owned retail network. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, it generated $44.5 billion of revenue.

Valero reports three operating segments: Refining, Renewable Diesel, and Ethanol. Refining supplies conventional transport fuels such as gasoline and diesel. Renewable Diesel supplies low-carbon fuels such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. Ethanol supplies biofuel blendstock and distillers corn oil.

The business is still led by conventional refining. In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Refining generated $42.3 billion of external-customer revenue, while Renewable Diesel generated $1.2 billion and Ethanol generated $1 billion.

Management's main operating job is to keep feedstocks moving into plants and keep those plants running reliably. That matters because Valero buys nearly all of the crude oil, corn, and other feedstocks it processes, so plant uptime and sourcing shape margins.

The company is also reshaping its California footprint after idling the Benicia refinery in April 2026 while continuing to serve Northern California through imports and other supply arrangements. The business still turns mainly on refining conditions and reliable operations.
