Amazon turns customer traffic into several forms of revenue, with AWS providing the group’s clearest profit engine. The company operates online stores in North America and internationally, sells products directly, and charges independent merchants for marketplace, fulfillment, and transaction services. Advertising monetizes shopper and seller attention, while Prime subscriptions support recurring revenue and purchase frequency.

Amazon’s reported structure separates North America stores, International stores, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud-computing business. AWS lets organizations rent computing infrastructure, storage, databases, analytics, and related services over the internet. This business differs economically from retail because usage-based services can generate revenue without Amazon owning every product sold to customers.

The company’s identity therefore rests on a commerce network supported by a higher-margin computing platform. AWS net sales grew 37% to $42.2 billion in the latest quarter, while group net sales grew 20% to $200.6 billion. Investors should view Amazon as a company that must convert traffic, merchant activity, advertising demand, and cloud usage into durable profit while supporting the capacity required by its largest profit engine.
